This is an updated version of something I wrote a few months ago regarding Dolby, which is timely thanks to the rollout of a competitive product at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show.
This one is no great shakes (yet!) but worth pointing out…
I’m guessing that the last time you thought about Dolby DLB 0.37%↑ was… not lately, if ever.
Most of its revenue comes from licensing its iconic audio and video technology to electronics manufacturers. In recent years the growth of that licensing revenue has been tepid at best. That story is in the below chart…
A big part of that slowdown can be attributed to lackluster growth in consumer electronics, which has been and is expected to be underwhelming. At Dolby, consumer electronics last quarter represented 14% of revenue, with management saying it expects it to be “down mid-single digits” this year.
